CONSTRUCTION SITE FENCE AS A STORY OF IDENTITY

Abstract
This text analyses example of the construction site fence around Yerebatan Park, above the Basilica Cistern in Sultanahmet District in Istanbul. It considers the involvement of “heritage” bearers, i.e. city dwellers, and tourists in the process of protection/reconstruction of cultural monuments and wider urban areas. Small moves, such as printing material that conveys and interprets the story of objects/heritage that is in the process of protection and/or reconstruction and placing it in a public space, can affect citizens, informing them about what is happening in their city, as well as tourists, for which serve as additional information about the foreign and unknown city in which they are located. At the same time, the basic function of the fence (separation of accessible and inaccessible space) is transformed into a potential link between socially divided groups of people (city residents and tourists) and directly affects the shaping of their identities.
